About the Canon PowerShot A2100 IS
Canon's PowerShot A2100 IS appeared in February 2009 as a compact powered by two AA batteries. A 1/2.3-inch CCD sensor of about 12 megapixels records the image through a 6x optical zoom covering 36-216 mm in 35mm terms, with an aperture of F3.2-5.9 and optical image stabilization.
The camera is 102 x 64 x 32 mm and weighs about 185 g, so it is larger than the lithium-ion compacts of its time. The extra thickness holds the AA cells and gives a firmer grip. A 3-inch monitor displays the image, and recording goes to SD or SDHC cards. Alkaline batteries were supplied with the camera, and rechargeable NiMH cells also work, which makes it convenient on trips where charging is difficult. With a 36 mm wide end and a 216 mm tele end, it fits portraits, outdoor scenes and sports, though cramped interiors are harder to fit in.
Buying one used
The A2100 IS takes two AA batteries, alkaline or NiMH. Inspect the battery compartment for corrosion, test the 6x lens and stabilization, check the 3-inch screen, and confirm that an SD or SDHC card works.
