About the Canon PowerShot A430
Canon's PowerShot A430 was released in March 2006 as an entry-level compact with a 1/3-inch CCD sensor of about 4 megapixels. Its lens gives a 4x optical zoom covering 39-156 mm in 35mm terms, and the camera is powered by two AA batteries.
The body measures 103.0 x 51.8 x 40.2 mm excluding protrusions and weighs about 160 g without batteries. That depth makes room for the AA cells and a good grip. A 1.8-inch TFT monitor shows the scene with 100% field of view. Recording goes to SD cards, so it predates the SDHC format. Alkaline or optional NiMH AA batteries can be used, and the ACK800 AC adapter kit was sold separately. With a 39 mm starting angle, it fits portraits and general snapshots better than wide scenes. Its image size is small by modern standards, but the simple design and common batteries made it practical.
Buying one used
The A430 runs on two AA batteries, alkaline or NiMH. Check the battery compartment for corrosion, test the 4x lens, inspect the 1.8-inch screen, and use an SD card, since SDHC is not among the supported formats.
