About the Canon PowerShot N100
The PowerShot N100, released in January 2014, is a compact with a 1/1.7-type CMOS sensor of about 12 megapixels and a bright 24-120 mm lens in 35mm-equivalent terms. The 5x optical zoom has an aperture of F1.8-5.7, wide and fast at the short end, which helps indoors and in the evening.
The body measures 105 x 68 x 36 mm and weighs about 289 g, a little chunkier than slim pocket models but sensible for the sensor and lens it carries. A 3-inch monitor is fitted for framing and playback. Power comes from the NB-12L lithium-ion battery, and images are saved to SD, SDHC or SDXC cards. It suits everyday shooting, portraits and low-light scenes better than distant subjects, given the modest zoom reach.
Buying one used
Check the NB-12L battery and its charger. With an F1.8 wide end, inspect the lens for haze or dust and watch the 5x zoom for smooth travel. Test the 3-inch monitor and the SD slot.
