About the Canon PowerShot SD950 IS (Digital IXUS 960 IS)
The Canon PowerShot SD950 IS, sold as the Digital IXUS 960 IS in some regions, arrived in August 2007. It pairs a 1/1.7-type CCD of about 12 effective megapixels with a 36-133 mm (35 mm equivalent) lens, a 3.7x optical zoom with an aperture of F2.8-5.8.
The body measures 96 x 60 x 28 mm and weighs about 191 g, which gives it a reassuring heft in the hand. The rear screen is 2.5 inches, power comes from the NB-5L lithium-ion battery, and images are saved to SD or SDHC cards. Reaching 133 mm at the long end, it handles street scenes and portraits taken from a polite distance. With a CCD of this size and a fast F2.8 opening at the wide end, it gives you a practical set of specifications for travel and indoor photography.
Buying one used
The battery is the dedicated NB-5L. Check how smoothly the lens extends through the zoom range, that SD or SDHC cards are read correctly, and that the 2.5-inch screen displays cleanly.
