About the Nikon Coolpix AW120
Released in February 2014, the Nikon Coolpix AW120 belongs to the waterproof and rugged compact class. Inside is a 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor of 16 megapixels, paired with a 24-120 mm-equivalent lens that opens to F2.8 at the wide end and closes to F4.9 at full 5x optical zoom. That range covers wide scenery, family snapshots and moderate telephoto framing, which is a sensible spread for a camera meant to be carried to beaches, trails and ski slopes.
The 3-inch monitor handles composition and playback. The body is 110 x 66 x 26 mm and weighs 213 g, noticeably heavier than a plain pocket compact because of its sealed construction. It uses the EN-EL12 lithium-ion battery and records to SD, SDHC and SDXC cards.
Buying one used
Check that the EN-EL12 battery still lasts and that the SD, SDHC or SDXC card slot door closes firmly. For a rugged model, inspect the door seals, the lens glass and the 3-inch monitor for scratches, fogging or moisture traces.
