About the Pentax Efina
The Pentax Efina arrived in June 2013 as a slim compact built around a 1/2.3-inch CCD sensor with 14 megapixels. Its 5x optical zoom covers 26-130 mm in 35mm-equivalent terms at F3.5-6.3, a range that handles room interiors, street scenes and moderate telephoto framing without much fuss. At 87 x 54 x 21 mm and 91 g it is among the lightest cameras in its class, so it slips into a jacket pocket easily.
The 2.5-inch monitor is modest by later standards, and the aperture narrows quickly toward the long end, so steady light helps at full zoom. Power comes from the D-LI109 lithium-ion battery, and images are saved to SD or SDHC cards. For casual snapshots and travel notes the Efina is a simple, uncomplicated tool, and CCD fans may enjoy the rendering of this older sensor type.
Buying one used
Check that the D-LI109 battery holds a charge and fits snugly. Test an SD or SDHC card for reliable writing, run the 5x lens through its full travel, and look over the 2.5-inch monitor for dead pixels or scratches.
