Canon released the ELPH 310 HS (IXUS 230 HS) in August 2011 as a pocket zoom with an 8x optical lens covering 28-224 mm at F3-5.9. Its 1/2.3-inch BSI-CMOS sensor delivers about 12 megapixels, and the lens range gives more reach than the 5x models released earlier that year.
The camera is 96 x 57 x 22 mm and weighs about 140 g. On the back is a 3-inch monitor, and recording goes to SD, SDHC or SDXC cards. The battery is an NB-4L lithium-ion pack, shared with several other Canon compacts of the period. At 28 mm the wide end is adequate for landscapes and group portraits, and the 224 mm tele end brings in details such as rooflines, signs or a performer on a stage. Its balance of reach and size is its main characteristic: it is a general-purpose camera that still fits in a shirt pocket.
Buying one used
Check that the NB-4L lithium-ion battery holds a charge and that a charger is included. Extend and retract the 8x lens, inspect the 3-inch screen for scratches, and test an SD, SDHC or SDXC card.
