About the Canon ELPH 520 HS (IXUS 500 HS)
Introduced in January 2012, the Canon ELPH 520 HS, known as the IXUS 500 HS outside North America, is a travel zoom with a 12x optical lens covering 28-336 mm in 35mm terms. The aperture ranges from F3.4 to F5.6, which is relatively even for such a long reach. Behind it sits a 1/2.3-inch BSI-CMOS sensor of about 10 megapixels.
The camera is 87 x 54 x 19 mm and weighs about 155 g, so a 336 mm telephoto fits into a body only 19 mm thick. A 3-inch monitor is used for framing, and recording goes to SD, SDHC or SDXC cards. The battery is an NB-9L lithium-ion pack. With 28 mm at the wide end, it handles street views and interiors, and the long end picks out distant architecture or wildlife. Its slim shape makes it a travel companion that does not need a separate bag.
