About the Canon PowerShot S80
Released in October 2005, the Canon PowerShot S80 is an advanced compact built around a large 1/1.8-inch CCD sensor of about 8 megapixels. The lens covers 28-100 mm in 35mm terms, roughly a 3.6x zoom, and the 28 mm wide end was a distinctive feature among compacts of its time.
The body measures 104.0 x 57.0 x 38.8 mm excluding protrusions and weighs about 225 g, which is solid compared with slim pocket cameras. A high-brightness 2.5-inch low-temperature polysilicon TFT monitor offers a wide viewing angle and 100% field of view. Recording goes to SD cards, and an NB-2LH rechargeable lithium-ion battery supplies power. The ACK-DC20 AC adapter kit was sold separately. The wide angle suits landscapes, interiors and group portraits, and the relatively large sensor was part of its appeal for enthusiasts. It is a heavier compact that rewards careful handling.
Buying one used
The S80 uses an NB-2LH lithium-ion battery; check that it still holds a charge. Test the lens extension, inspect the 2.5-inch monitor and the body for wear, and use an SD card to confirm reliable writing.
