About the Olympus VR-340
Released in January 2012, the Olympus VR-340 is a travel compact with a 10x optical zoom covering 24-240 mm in 35mm terms. The aperture runs F3-5.7, in front of a 1/2.3-inch CCD sensor of 16 megapixels. The 24 mm wide end is wider than the 25 mm found on several rivals, which helps with interiors and landscapes.
It measures 96 x 57 x 19 mm and weighs 125 g, with a 3-inch monitor on the back. Power is the LI-50B lithium-ion battery, and recording goes to SD, SDHC or SDXC cards. The slim body and 10x range suit everyday travel photography, from street scenes to moderate telephoto shots in daylight. The CCD sensor is best used in good light.
Buying one used
Check that the LI-50B battery holds charge, and test the 10x zoom for smooth, even travel. Confirm SD, SDHC or SDXC cards are recognised and inspect the 3-inch monitor for scratches.
