The Olympus SZ-31MR iHS arrived in February 2012 as a long-zoom travel compact. Its 24x optical zoom covers 25-600 mm in 35mm terms, paired with a 1/2.3-inch BSI-CMOS sensor of 16 megapixels. The aperture runs from F3 at the wide end to F6.9 at full telephoto, so the top of the range calls for bright light or a steady hold.
A 3-inch monitor handles framing, and the body measures 106 x 69 x 40 mm at 226 g, which is on the substantial side for a pocket camera but reasonable given the lens. Power comes from the LI-50B lithium-ion battery, and images are saved to SD, SDHC or SDXC cards. With that reach, it suits travel snapshots, distant subjects and general daylight use more than low-light work.
