About the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS50
Released in January 2015, the Lumix DMC-ZS50 is a pocketable superzoom built around a 1/2.3-type CMOS sensor of about 12 megapixels. Its 30x optical zoom spans 24-720 mm in 35mm-equivalent terms, with an aperture of F3.3-6.4.
With a modest pixel count on a small chip, the sensor suits long-zoom shooting, where fine detail is limited by the lens anyway. The body is 111 x 65 x 34 mm and weighs 243 g. A 3-inch monitor is used for composition, a lithium-ion battery with a charger provides power, and images are stored on SD, SDHC or SDXC cards. It is aimed at holidays, street scenes and distant subjects, where one lens has to cover almost everything, and it is small enough to keep in a jacket pocket all day.
Buying one used
Check the lithium-ion battery holds its charge and that the charger is supplied. Extend the 30x lens for grinding or play, look for dust behind the glass, and test the 3-inch monitor and SD slot.
