About the Pentax Optio M50
The Pentax Optio M50 arrived in January 2008 as a light zoom compact with a 1/2.35-type CCD of about 8 megapixels. Its lens covers 36-180 mm in 35 mm terms, a 5x optical zoom, with an aperture range of F3.5-5.6.
The body measures 95 x 55 x 24 mm and weighs 130 g. The 180 mm telephoto end reaches distant subjects such as school events and faraway views. A 2.5-inch screen sits on the back, the D-LI78 lithium-ion battery supplies power, and images are saved to SD or SDHC cards. At 130 g it is easy to carry all day, so the long zoom is always at hand when a trip or an event offers a distant subject.
Buying one used
The battery is the D-LI78. With a 5x zoom lens, check that the zoom extends and retracts smoothly, that SD or SDHC cards are read correctly, and that the 2.5-inch screen displays cleanly.
