About the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX150

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX150 appeared in February 2012 as a pocketable travel compact. Its 10x optical zoom is equal to 25-250 mm in 35mm terms, with an aperture of F3.3-5.9, and it feeds an 18-megapixel 1/2.3-inch BSI-CMOS sensor. Back-illuminated CMOS helps it in dim light more than older CCD sensors do.

At 95 x 56 x 22 mm and 133 g, it is light enough for a coat pocket, and a 3-inch monitor handles composition. The battery is the NP-BN, and storage is SD, SDHC or SDXC. It works well as a walk-around camera for travel, family events and landscape work where a moderate telephoto is enough. The 25 mm wide end copes with interiors and group shots, and the 250 mm end pulls in architecture details or distant scenery on a bright day. Because the sensor is only 1/2.3-inch, expect noise to rise as light fades.

Buying one used

Confirm the NP-BN battery is healthy and charges fully, and test an SD, SDHC or SDXC card. Check the 10x lens for smooth, quiet movement, and inspect the 3-inch monitor for scratches or dead pixels.
