About the Canon ELPH 130 (IXUS 140)

The Canon ELPH 130, sold elsewhere as the IXUS 140, arrived in January 2013. It uses a 1/2.3-inch BSI-CMOS sensor of about 16 megapixels behind an 8x optical zoom that spans 28-224 mm at F3.2-6.9. The back-illuminated design is the main technical difference from the CCD compacts Canon sold in the same period.

At 95 x 56 x 21 mm and about 133 g, the body slips easily into a pocket. The 3-inch monitor helps with framing and reviewing shots. Recording goes to SD, SDHC or SDXC cards, and power comes from an NB-11L lithium-ion battery. The 28 mm wide end suits rooms and landscapes, and the 224 mm long end brings in subjects at a distance. It is a plain, easy-to-carry everyday compact with a respectable zoom range for its size.

Buying one used

The Canon ELPH 130 takes an NB-11L lithium-ion battery; confirm the pack still holds a charge. Check that the 8x lens extends and retracts smoothly, look for marks on the 3-inch monitor, and test an SD, SDHC or SDXC card.
