About the Canon PowerShot A2500

Canon introduced the PowerShot A2500 in January 2013 as a simple compact with a 1/2.3-inch CCD sensor of about 16 megapixels. Its 5x optical zoom covers 28-140 mm in 35mm terms, and the F2.8 maximum aperture at the wide end is bright for a compact with this zoom range. At full telephoto the aperture closes to F6.9.

The body is 98 x 56 x 20 mm and weighs about 135 g, with a 3-inch monitor on the back. Images go to SD, SDHC or SDXC cards, and the camera uses an NB-11L lithium-ion battery. The shorter zoom range keeps the lens compact and gives the wide end a little more light indoors, which suits family snapshots, travel records and casual use. It is a no-frills camera for people who want a CCD look in a slim, light shape.

Buying one used

Look for an NB-11L lithium-ion battery that holds its charge, and confirm a charger comes with the camera. Test the 5x lens through its full travel, inspect the 3-inch screen, and verify that an SD, SDHC or SDXC card records properly.
