About the Canon PowerShot A400
The Canon PowerShot A400 arrived in September 2004 with a 1/3.2-inch CCD of about 3.2 megapixels. Its lens covers 45-100 mm in 35mm terms, described as roughly 2.2x optical zoom, which puts it in short-telephoto territory from the widest setting: it suits portraits and tabletop subjects more than interiors.
A 1.5-inch low-temperature polysilicon TFT monitor with 100% coverage handles framing. The body is 107 x 53.4 x 36.8 mm and weighs about 165 g without batteries or card. Two AA cells power it: alkaline as the primary option, with nickel-metal hydride listed as an optional secondary choice, plus the ACK800 AC adapter kit sold separately. Images are stored on SD cards, which is a notable move from the CompactFlash used by several of its earlier siblings and keeps the card side easy to source today.
Buying one used
Runs on two AA cells, alkaline or nickel-metal hydride, so inspect the battery compartment for leakage marks. Media is SD: confirm card recognition. Cycle the lens through its range and check the 1.5-inch monitor for uneven display.
