About the Casio Exilim EX-TR50

The Casio Exilim EX-TR50 arrived in September 2014 as a compact built around a 1/1.7-inch BSI-CMOS sensor of 11 megapixels. That sensor is larger than the sensors found in most compacts of the period, and it sits behind a fixed 21 mm-equivalent lens at F2.8 with a single optical zoom step, meaning there is no zoom to speak of. The wide, bright lens suits group shots, handheld portraits at arm's length, and cramped interiors, while distant subjects are out of reach without cropping.

The 3-inch monitor is the main framing tool. The body measures 126 x 64 x 15 mm and weighs 167 g, so it slips into a pocket easily. Power comes from the NP-150 lithium-ion battery with a USB charger, and images go to SD, SDHC or SDXC cards.

Buying one used

Confirm the NP-150 battery holds a charge and that the USB charger works, since the camera relies on that pairing. Test an SD, SDHC or SDXC card, check the fixed wide lens for scratches, and look over the 3-inch monitor for dead pixels or marks.
