About the FujiFilm FinePix AV200 (FinePix AV205)

The FujiFilm FinePix AV200 (FinePix AV205), released in January 2011, is an entry-level compact with a 1/2.3-inch CCD sensor of about 14 megapixels. Its 3x optical zoom runs from 32 mm to 96 mm in 35mm terms at F2.9-5.2.

The telephoto end stops at 96 mm, so the design favors simplicity over reach. The body is 93 x 60 x 28 mm and weighs 168 g, and the 2.7-inch monitor handles framing and playback. It runs on two alkaline batteries and records to SD or SDHC cards. The aperture only narrows to F5.2 at the long end, which keeps everyday snapshots reasonably bright across the zoom range. Using standard alkaline cells means no proprietary charger is needed, which keeps the camera easy to run and easy to hand to a beginner.

Buying one used

Power comes from two alkaline batteries, so check the compartment for corrosion. Storage is SD or SDHC only, so a SDXC card will not be supported. Extend the lens through its range and inspect the 2.7-inch screen.
