About the FujiFilm FinePix JX300 (FinePix JX305)

Released in January 2011, the FujiFilm FinePix JX300 (FinePix JX305) pairs a 1/2.3-inch CCD of about 14 megapixels with a 28-140 mm lens in 35mm terms, a 5x optical zoom. The F2.6 aperture at the wide end is relatively bright for a compact of this size, which helps indoors and at dusk, though it narrows to F6.2 at full telephoto.

The camera is 94 x 56 x 24 mm and weighs 130 g. A 2.7-inch monitor is used for framing, and SD or SDHC cards store the images. The 28 mm wide end fits landscapes, interiors and group portraits, while 140 mm reaches moderately distant subjects. At the long end, brighter light improves the odds of sharp results. A dedicated lithium-ion battery and charger are supplied.

Buying one used

Confirm the dedicated lithium-ion battery charges and lasts, and that the charger is present. Extend and retract the 5x lens several times, check the 2.7-inch display, and test SD or SDHC card writing.
