About the Olympus SZ-16 iHS
Olympus released the SZ-16 iHS in January 2013 as a long-zoom compact. A 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor of 16 megapixels sits behind a 25-600 mm-equivalent lens, a 24x optical zoom with an aperture from F3 to F6.9. That reach covers wide travel views as well as distant details such as rooflines, animals or events seen from far away.
The body is 108 x 70 x 40 mm and weighs 226 g, thicker than a slim compact, with room for the zoom mechanism. A 3-inch monitor shows the view. The camera runs on the LI-50B battery, and images go to SD, SDHC or SDXC cards, a common standard that keeps storage simple. With a lens of this reach, stabilization and good light matter, so it is best used outdoors in daytime when the telephoto end is needed.
Buying one used
Check the LI-50B battery charges and holds power. Test with an SD, SDHC or SDXC card, extend the 24x lens through its whole range and listen for rough movement, and look over the 3-inch monitor.
