About the Canon PowerShot 600N

The Canon PowerShot 600N, released in March 1997, uses a 1/3-inch CCD with a fixed 50 mm equivalent lens at F2.5 and no zoom. A 50 mm view corresponds to the traditional standard angle, and F2.5 is a fairly bright aperture.

The body measures 159.5 x 92.5 x 58.8 mm and weighs about 420 g, a substantial size for a camera that stores images in 1 MB of built-in flash memory. A PC card slot accepting Type II and Type III cards provides additional storage. It is powered by six AA alkaline batteries, or by a dedicated nickel-cadmium battery. The PC card slot is the unusual feature here, since it ties the camera to the laptop era of 1997, and anyone using it today will want a matching card or reader. It is a distinct early entry in the PowerShot range.

Buying one used

Takes six AA alkaline batteries or a dedicated Ni-Cd pack: check for corrosion. Storage is 1 MB internal flash plus a PC card slot for Type II and III cards, so test a card and a reader. Check the fixed lens operation.
