About the Canon PowerShot S30
Released in December 2001, the Canon PowerShot S30 has a 1/1.8-inch CCD and a 35-105 mm lens in 35mm terms at F2.8-4.9, described as roughly 3x optical zoom. The aperture narrows by about one and a half stops from wide to tele, which is typical for a lens of this size.
A 1.8-inch low-temperature polysilicon TFT monitor with 100% coverage handles framing. The body is 112 x 58 x 42 mm without protrusions and weighs about 260 g without battery or card. Power is the NB-2L rechargeable lithium-ion battery included in the box, with the ACK700 AC adapter kit sold separately. Recording goes to CompactFlash. The S30 is the earliest of the S-series compacts sharing this body, so it shows the shape before the sensor was raised in later models.
Buying one used
The NB-2L lithium-ion battery powers it: check that it charges and holds power, and whether a charger is included. Media is CompactFlash, so test card recognition. Check lens extension and the 1.8-inch monitor.
