About the Canon PowerShot S40

The Canon PowerShot S40, released in October 2001, uses a 1/1.8-inch CCD of about 4 megapixels with a 35-105 mm lens in 35mm terms at F2.8-4.9, described as roughly 3x optical zoom. The lens specification is the same as on the earlier S-series model of this body, with a higher-resolution sensor.

The 1.8-inch low-temperature polysilicon TFT monitor has 100% coverage. Body size is 112 x 58 x 42 mm without protrusions and weight about 260 g without battery or card, identical to the earlier S-series model in these figures. It uses the NB-2L lithium-ion battery supplied with the camera; an ACK700 AC adapter kit was available separately. Images go to CompactFlash. Aperture runs from F2.8 at the wide end to F4.9 at full zoom, so bright light and the wide setting give the most flexibility. It is a straightforward 4-megapixel compact in a sturdy body.

Buying one used

Uses the NB-2L lithium-ion battery: confirm it charges and keeps its charge, and see whether a charger comes with it. Media is CompactFlash, so test a card. Inspect the lens movement and the 1.8-inch monitor.
