About the Canon PowerShot SD980 IS
Released in August 2009, the Canon PowerShot SD980 IS carries a 24-120 mm (35mm equivalent) lens with an F2.8-5.9 aperture and a 5x optical zoom. Behind it sits a 1/2.3-inch CCD with an effective 12 million pixels.
Starting at 24mm gives a wide field of view for landscapes, buildings and tabletop shots, and the zoom reaches 120mm at the long end. The body is 100 (W) x 53 (H) x 23 (D) mm and weighs about 150g, with a 3-inch LCD on the back. It uses the dedicated NB-6L lithium-ion battery and charger and records to SD / SDHC cards. In practice the 5x range lets one lens cover wide scenes at 24mm and moderate telephoto framing at 120mm, and the CCD sensor reflects the design approach of cameras from that period.

The dedicated battery is the NB-6L, so test how many shots a charge gives. Cards are SD / SDHC. Look over the 3-inch LCD for dead pixels and listen for odd noises as the lens moves.
