About the Samsung HZ25W (WB5000)
The Samsung HZ25W (WB5000), released in September 2009, is a travel-oriented high-zoom compact with a 26-624 mm equivalent lens at F2.8-5, a 24x optical zoom. It uses a 1/2.33-type CCD of about 12 megapixels and a 3.0-inch screen.
The body measures 116 x 83 x 92 mm and weighs 428 g, so it is far bulkier than pocket compacts and is carried more like a small bridge-style camera. One lens covers a 26 mm wide angle through 624 mm telephoto, which removes the need to swap lenses on trips, but at the long end even small movements blur the frame. Recording is to SD or SDHC cards, and power comes from a dedicated battery.
Buying one used
Check the printed code on the battery and that a charger comes with it. Run the 24x zoom through its full range, and check SD or SDHC recognition and the screen.
