About the Samsung ST80
The Samsung ST80 is a slim compact released in January 2010. It pairs a 1/2.33-type CCD of about 14 megapixels with a 35-105 mm equivalent lens at F3.3-5.5, a 3x optical zoom. The body measures 92 x 55 x 19 mm and weighs 118 g, so it slips easily into a pocket, and the rear screen is 3.0 inches.
Packing roughly 14 megapixels onto a 1/2.33-type sensor means each pixel is small, so noise is likely to show up sooner in dim rooms than in daylight. The modest 35 mm wide end suits snapshots, portraits and travel scenes taken outdoors. Power comes from the dedicated BP-70A lithium-ion battery, and images are saved to SD or SDHC cards.
Buying one used
Check that the dedicated BP-70A battery holds a charge and that a charger is included. Insert an SD or SDHC card to confirm it is recognized, and watch the lens extend and retract smoothly.
